About WHOI

WHOI at a Glance

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is dedicated to research and education to advance understanding of the ocean and its interaction with the Earth system, and to communicating this understanding for the benefit of society.


Scientific research at WHOI is divided into five academic departments. Cross-disciplinary and cooperative work is also supported by four Ocean Institutes, as well as a wide range of centers, programs, labs, and groups.

Ships & Technology

WHOI operates four research vessels for the academic community and also designs, maintains, and deploys a wide range of instruments, observing systems, and underwater vehicles, several of which are part of the National Deep Submergence Facility headquartered at WHOI.


WHOI’s mission includes educating the next generation of ocean science leaders through a joint PhD program run with MIT, as well as a range of post- and under-graduate opportunities.
